Frequently Asked Questions: Online Psychology Therapy & Assessment
How often should I schedule sessions?
Session frequency varies based on individual needs and therapeutic goals, and will be discussed collaboratively to determine what is appropriate for your situation.
How long are therapy sessions?
Standard therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes in duration. This timeframe allows for meaningful therapeutic work while maintaining appropriate boundaries and scheduling consistency.
What is the cancellation policy?
Please provide at least 42 business days notice for appointment changes or cancellations. This allows adequate time for scheduling adjustments and ensures fair access for all clients. Natalie Cullen Psychological Services acknowledges that emergencies do happen. Please discuss with us if you are not able to attend an appointment due to an emergency. Specific cancellation terms will be discussed during your initial contact.
How do I book my first appointment?
To book your first appointment, please contact the practice directly via email or the Contact Us form. Initial appointments typically involve a brief discussion to understand your needs, determine whether this service is suitable for you, and discuss available appointment times.
Diagnostic Assessments
Diagnostic assessments are available for adolescents (13+) and adults seeking assessment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), or both. All assessments are conducted via secure telehealth and are guided by current Australian best-practice standards, including the Australian ADHD Professionals Association (AADPA) Clinical Practice Guidelines (2022) for ADHD, and the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism in Australia (2023) for ASD. Assessments are conducted by Natalie Cullen, registered psychologist and Clinical Psychology Registrar with AHPRA.
The process
All assessments involve a clinical interview across multiple sessions, validated questionnaires completed online before your first appointment, and where possible, a collateral interview with someone who knows you well — such as a parent, partner, or sibling. An independent account from someone outside your own perspective is a valuable part of both ADHD and ASD assessment, and information from someone who knew you in childhood is particularly useful. If no informant is available, alternative approaches will be discussed with you at the outset.
ADHD assessment typically involves four sessions. ASD assessment, and combined ADHD and ASD assessment, generally requires additional sessions to allow adequate time for the more detailed clinical interviewing these pathways involve. The number of sessions is discussed with you before commencing.
The report
Following your final session, a comprehensive written diagnostic report is prepared, usually within 2–3 weeks. The report documents the assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions, and tailored recommendations, and is suitable for sharing with your GP, psychiatrist, school, employer, or for use in NDIS, DSP, or other applications where relevant.
Completing an assessment does not guarantee a particular diagnostic outcome. The purpose is to conduct a thorough, evidence-based evaluation. The findings may result in a diagnosis, a diagnosis of a different or co-occurring condition, or a conclusion that diagnostic criteria are not currently met. Whatever the outcome, you will receive a written report explaining the findings and any relevant recommendations.
Feedback session
For ADHD assessment, a dedicated feedback session is available as an optional addition to the standard package. This is a 50-minute telehealth session in which the report findings are discussed in detail, questions are answered, and next steps are explored. Many clients find this a valuable part of the process, and it is available at the standard session fee of $240, with a Medicare rebate of $98.95 available with a valid Mental Health Care Plan.
For ASD and combined ADHD and ASD assessment, a feedback session is included as a standard component of the assessment process. Receiving an ASD diagnosis — or any outcome following an ASD assessment — can be a significant experience, and dedicated time to discuss findings, ask questions, and receive information about next steps is considered an important part of thorough, person-centred care.
Fees and Medicare
ADHD assessment is $1,660 in total, with an optional feedback session available at $240. ASD and combined assessment fees vary depending on scope and complexity — please enquire directly for a fee estimate. Medicare rebates are available for clinical sessions where a valid Mental Health Care Plan from your GP is held. The written report is not covered by Medicare. Full fee information is available on the Fees & Rebates page.
Medication
Prescribing of ADHD medication requires a medical practitioner. As of 1 December 2025, specialist GPs in Queensland are able to initiate, modify, and continue ADHD medication for adults, meaning many people no longer need a referral to a psychiatrist or paediatrician. Your assessment report can be provided to your GP or relevant prescribing specialist to support this process.

Is telehealth suitable for diagnostic assessment?
Telehealth assessment is appropriate for most people and is the sole mode of service delivery at this practice. There are some circumstances where telehealth may not be the most suitable option — for example, where significant technology difficulties are anticipated, where the assessment environment cannot reasonably support a focused clinical interview, or where the complexity of presentation may warrant in-person assessment. Suitability for telehealth assessment is discussed as part of the initial enquiry process. If telehealth is not considered appropriate for your needs, this will be communicated clearly and where possible alternative services will be suggested.
Are Medicare rebates available?
Medicare rebates may be available under a Mental Health Treatment Plan with a valid referral from your GP or psychiatrist. This may provide access to Medicare rebates for psychological services, subject to eligibility and review by your referring practitioner.
Rebates and Fees FAQ
What payment methods do you accept?
Payment is required at the time of service. A valid credit or debit card must be held securely on file to confirm your booking and to process payments on the day of your appointment (this does not apply to NDIS-managed participants). If you have questions or need to discuss payment arrangements, please contact us prior to your appointment.
Do you accept private health insurance?
Coverage varies between private health insurance providers and individual policies. We recommend contacting your health fund directly to confirm your level of cover for psychological services. You may be required to pay the full fee at the time of service and claim reimbursement directly from your insurer.
Is my personal information kept confidential?
Yes, confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychological practice. All personal information shared during sessions is protected under Australian privacy laws and the APS Code of Ethics. Your information will not be disclosed to others without your consent, except where disclosure is permitted or required by law.
How is my information stored and protected?
All client records are stored securely using encrypted digital system (Zanda) and are accessible only to authorised personnel. Physical documents, if any, are kept in locked, secure locations. Records are maintained for the period required by professional standards and are then securely destroyed.
Confidentiality FAQ
For specific questions about confidentiality and privacy policies, please contact the practice directly. Individual circumstances may require personalised discussion to ensure you understand your rights and protections.
When might confidentiality be limited?
Confidentiality may be limited in circumstances where there is a serious and imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or when disclosure is required by law. These situations are typically discussed during the initial session, where appropriate.
Can family members or friends contact the therapist about my sessions?
No, information about your sessions cannot be shared with family members or friends without your explicit written consent. This includes confirming whether you are a client. We encourage you to discuss with your support network any information you feel comfortable sharing yourself.
